Chartered in 1940, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) strives to help protect and restore Chesapeake Bay and the coastal ocean by conducting research, educating students and citizens, and advising policymakers at local, national, and international levels. VIMS' School of Marine Science is a graduate school of the College of William & Mary.
Nunnally Ichthyology Collection: larval mola Ranzania
Baby ocean sunfish are hard to come by, but VIMS is lucky enough to have several specimens in our fish library. Check out these larval slender sunfish (Ranzania laevis), which we show here under a microscope and as a CT scan. CT scans, which are compilations of X-rays, reveal the internal anatomy of these tiny specimens - including what they recently ate!

Nunnally Ichthyology Collection: billfish tank
Переглядів 81Рік тому
Today we are sharing another bonus video from when we emptied 200 gallons of ethanol out of a specimen tank to replace it with fresh, clear ethanol. Take a peek into a tank that houses primarily billfishes and listen as collections manager Sarah describes how VIMS scientists collaborate with national fishing tournaments to acquire specimens. Because we know you’re curious: the ethanol you see i...
Nunnally Ichthyology Collection: sailfish and remora
Переглядів 64Рік тому
The ethanol was changed out of the specimen tank that holds our preserved white shark a while back. It was a great opportunity to also capture a story about another specimen, a sailfish, that resides in the same tank. In this video, listen to collection manager Sarah Huber tell the story of one of her favorite specimen loans. Edit: in the video she accidentally says "...as they go from ocean to...
Nunnally Ichthyology Collection: ethanol change
Переглядів 75Рік тому
Specimens in the Nunnally Ichthyology Collection are stored in ethanol. Occasionally the ethanol becomes discolored from pigments in the fish. Watch collections manager Sarah and M.S. student Miguel switch out 200 gallons of ethanol in our show-and-tell tank to prepare for our annual open house, Marine Science Day (and get a close-up view of our great white shark). originally posted: June 7, 2023
Nunnally Ichthyology Collection: loosejaw

What do Rudolph and the stoplight loosejaw have in common? They can both produce red light to see in the dark! Though, while Rudolph just wants to help Santa deliver presents to children, the stoplight loosejaw's motivation is a bit more nefarious - they use their red light to illuminate their prey while hunting. In this video, Miguel Montalvo, a graduate student at VIMS, presents a preserved s...
Nunnally Ichthyology Collection: wolffish
Переглядів 73Рік тому
AH-OOOOOOO!! These specimens are the perfect fishes to share during the Halloween season: wolffishes! Wolffishes, family Anarhichadidae, are native to the cold waters of the Arctic, North Pacific, and North Atlantic Oceans. There are 5 species (from 2 genera) of wolffishes. Dr. Eric Hilton presents two species of the genus Anarhichas here: Atlantic wolffish (preserved in ethanol), and Northern ...
Nunnally Ichthyology Collection: candiru

Miguel Montalvo, fisheries science graduate student at VIMS, presents a species of fish that haunts the streams of the Amazon: candiru (Vandellia cirrhosa). Candiru are small, freshwater, tropical catfishes native to the Amazon Basin that parasitize larger Amazonian fishes in a vampire-like fashion. To find their prey, they are drawn to urea, a natural byproduct of protein metabolism that is ex...
Nunnally Ichthyology Collection: sea lamprey part 2
Переглядів 390Рік тому
Sea lampreys are anadromous, which means they lives as adults in the ocean, but migrate up freshwater streams to reproduce. A female lamprey can lay up to 100,000 eggs. The larval form of sea lampreys are filter-feeders that live in streambed sand or mud burrows; they are called ammocoetes. Sea lamprey are native to the Atlantic coast throughout Eastern U.S. and Western Europe. They began to sp...
Nunnally Ichthyology Collection: sea lamprey part 1

Check out this fish! Sarah, collection manager of the Nunnally Ichthyology Collection at VIMS, presents a preserved specimen of sea lamprey. Sea lamprey are primitive fishes, lacking a lot of the characteristics that we normally think of when we think of fish, like scales, fins, and gills. originally posted: October 7, 2022

Are they related to gossamer worms
Do y'all make your downweller silos or do you buy them premade? If so where?
We can extend the conversation further more
How is it fried
They were mating
❤❤❤
I love this!! been searching for a Mola dissection for a while ❤❤
0:33 whoever is married to this stunning woman is insanely lucky , she’s is very pretty
Every time we go to new Smyrna Beach we see tons of them
Great-looking specimens! What's your preservation process?
Sunfish puzzle xd
This is exactly why I would never order Clams...
Why did this fish have those weird worm things when I saw the fish dicested after it was caught.
Is there someone i could email pictures too? My posting an interesting photo is getting some confusing comments. Cant tell if they are serious or satire 😅
I wouldn’t touch that with my bare hands
By now, our brilliant " expert " scientists should have finally figured out how to eliminate harmful algae blooms globally. But of course they're too obsessed with outerspace fantasy exploration hobbies to really focus on helping the average human to enjoy a happy, less stressful, more peaceful, and fun way of life. 😉
As someone who lives in Florida and every summer goes to Marco Island, these tiny clams are always found at the swash zone and are so cute! When i was younger (and to this day) i call them chipi chipis, i never understood why i did but i still do XD
freaky ahh crabs
Do you have video of larvae with eyes?
And they call this a job 😂
Gloves????
Dang, mola are weird
The little ones are coquina clams. They’re cute, but really quiet.
Cool 🎉
What is this fish called
Slender Sunfish (Ranzania Laevis)
Slender Sunfish (Ranzania Laevis)
Great work!
Ive seen them on logs never caught them have caught other turtles
Hi! I was wondering if you were to be in the marine biology field would you have to dive? I would want to be one to work in a lab and would prefer not to go inside the water. If so, what is that called?
Why is it so cute
How could you do such a thing?
Read description cuz idk 🤷♀️
Epic video! Pretty awesome… 👏👏👏🦫 Looks delicious!

What exactly is this? Are they in preservatives ?
The description says so I'm pretty sure
That fish you were referring to is a Turd Wrestler..we cat h them in pots here in Bogue Sound NC..we pull crab pots for the NC Confederation too..
honestly i was just wondering how this works
This is amazing!
Never knew that
neat
Kept telling my friends about this but they never believed me. Heres proof for them!
Interesting, never knew this!
Really Interesting!
love them
do they come back to the surface when they reach the bottom? or they stay there?
Nice vid made me wanna take a trip to the creek lake river etc..
Would this specimen still be venomous?
Alive? Yep. Dead, highly unlikely.
Would the venom denature pretty quickly, especially with the animal immersed in preservative?
Just found this channel. Awesome work!
You know nodoby is going to do that... right.😊
I told an Australian this once. He argued that "fishes" is not even a word. That day I gained a lot of confidence by learning that not all native speakers know their language better than a foreigner.
What the f is that jay 😂
Noooope....
